Supreme Court Upholds Healthcare Legislation

June 24, 2012

In a much anticipated ruling, the Supreme Court announced it has decided to uphold the health care law's individual mandate in a 5-4 decision, upending speculation that the justices would overturn the law. The mandate has been upheld as a tax, with Chief Justice John Roberts joining the liberal wing of the court. Under the law, people who do not have health insurance will have to pay 1 percent of their income to the IRS starting in 2014.
