Disability, Pregnancy Discrimination Suits Resolved for $75K, $60K, Respectively

The Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC) recently announced that employers in Texas and Pennsylvania have settled lawsuits alleging disability and pregnancy discrimination, BlueCross/Blue Shield of Texas (BCBS) has agreed to pay $75,000 to settle allegations that the Dallas health care company violated the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) when its online application system precluded a deaf applicant from completing the process. Friedman Realty Group, Inc, will pay $60,000 to resolve allegations that the Gibbsboro, New Jersey-based real estate investment firm that owns and manages apartment communities, retail shopping centers, and professional office buildings violated Title VII with its discriminatory treatment of a pregnant employee; Friedman Realty Group subjected a leasing agent at its Prospect Park, Pennsylvania, location to more scrutiny and discipline after she told management personnel that she was pregnant, and then fired her because of her pregnancy.
