Unemployment Rate Remains at 3.9% in August

According to the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, total non-farm payroll employment increased by 201,000 in August, and the unemployment rate was unchanged at 3.9 percent. Job gains occurred in professional and business services (+53,000), health care (+33,000), construction (+23,000), wholesale trade (+22,000), transportation and warehousing (+20,000), and mining (+6,000). Manufacturing saw a slight decrease in employment in August (-3,000). Employment showed little change over the month in other major industries, including retail trade, information, financial activities, leisure and hospitality, and government.
